                    Why there is no Google Docs file to download

                    A Google Doc is not a file on your computer. What Drive calls a .gdoc is a few bytes pointing at a document living on Google's servers, so nothing on this page can hand you one. Every site that advertises a "Google Docs download" is really giving you one of two things: a Word file, or a Make a copy link to a document somebody else created — and a copy link can only ever copy what is already in that document, which is a blank canvas.

                    So this page gives you both, labelled honestly. Your edits ride in the Word file. The copy link is for a blank template, and it cannot carry a single word you typed above.

                    Getting your canvas into Google Docs

                      Upload it to Drive

                      Open drive.google.com and drag the .docx in, or use New → File upload.

                      Open with Google Docs

                      Right-click the file → Open with → Google Docs. Docs converts the table and keeps it editable.

                      Share from Drive as usual. Comments and suggestions work on the converted table like any other doc.

                    Questions about the Google Docs version

                    Yes. Docs reads the Word table, the merged cells and the landscape page, and the result is editable in the browser. Cell shading and exact column widths can shift a little — Docs and Word do not lay out tables identically.

                    Because a copy link copies a document that already exists on Google’s servers. Putting your canvas into one would mean creating a document per visitor in an account we control, which needs a Google login and puts your business model on somebody else’s Drive. The Word upload keeps it yours.

                    Yes, and it is often the better fit for a canvas. Download the PowerPoint file and upload that to Drive; Slides opens it as nine editable shapes on one slide.
